Adrienne Rich Essay -- essays research papers fc
The Poetry of Adrienne Rich Adrienne Rich was born in Baltimore, Maryland in the year of 1929. Rich grew up in a household as she describes it as â⬠â⬠¦white, middle-class, full of books, and with a father who encouraged her to writeâ⬠(Daniel). Her father Arnold Rich was a doctor and a pathology professor and her mother, Helen Jones Rich , was a pianist and a composer. ââ¬Å"Adrienne Rich recalls her growing-up years clearly dominated by the intellectual presence and demands of the male in the family, her father, while correctly marked by the submerged tensions arising from the conflicts between the religious and cultural heritage of the father's Jewish background and her mother's Southern Protestantismâ⬠(Pope). In the year of 1951, Rich graduated from Radcliffe University. During this year, Adrienne Rich also won the Yale Younger Poets Prize for her first book, A Change of World. In 1953, Adrienne Rich married Alfred Conrad who was a Harvard economist; during the next five years Rich had three sons. Deborah Pope says that Richââ¬â¢s journal entries, from these years, state that this was an ââ¬Å"emotionally and artistically difficult periodâ⬠(Pope). Richââ¬â¢s poems were mainly influenced by Robert Frost, Yeates, Stevens, and Auden. She became a major influence, through her essays and poetry, in many areas of modern-day women's movements, she had become one of the most provoking voices on the politics of sexuality, race, power, and womenââ¬Ës culture. Adrienne Rich is a southern Jew who grew up during the forties. Rich lived in a gentle neighborhood and was never taught about her Jewish heritage. She eventually had to deal with conflicts between the religious and cultural heritage of her fatherââ¬â¢s Jewish background and her motherââ¬â¢s southern Protestantism (Pope). Richââ¬â¢s father didnââ¬â¢t show any signs of ethnicity in any way. He did this to fit into a society that was against Jewish people. In many of her works, Adrienne Rich talks about being oppressed. In her poem, ââ¬Å"1948: Jews,â⬠Adrienne Rich refers to her college years. At Radcliffe University, she was to stay away from Jews. No matter how much she wanted, she could not unite with them as a group because socially it was less acceptable. She had to avoid her own ethnicity to survive in the American culture. ââ¬Å"A Vision,â⬠is another poem Rich wrote that discusses the issue of... ...s full of sound and fury (Barclay). She has fused politics and poetry and also revitalized the lost American institution of political poetry. Adrienne Rich depicts herself in her early 1980's poem "Sources," "she is a woman with a mission, not to win prizes/but to change the laws of history" (Rothschild). Traumatic Brain Injury ( Tbi ) - 2998 Words
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) What are the challenges for the Army Soldier after being diagnosed with a TBI? Will the Army Soldier be able to resume a normal life along with their military career? Introduction Serving in the military comes with the preconceived notion that the possibility of getting hurt or killed in the line of duty is highly likely. I would argue that a Soldier doesn t think about getting hurt until it actually happens to them. So what happens when the injury, specifically a traumatic brain injury (TBI) leaves the Soldier with a permanent impairment or a disability? The challenge of trying to adapt as a person living with a disability could be overwhelming for the Soldier, and also for the Soldier s immediate family as well. The need to get one s life back to normal, establish new relationships with familiar people, or the need to better understand social experiences as a person with a TBI is addressed in an article by Hoogerdijk, Runge, and Haugboelle. The details of interviews with four people that were all diagnosed with a TBI reveals accounts of uncertainness and insecurities. The article pointed out that The individualsââ¬â¢ identities were threatened when they found out that they were no longer able to perform meaningful activities or sustain important relationships (Hoogerdijk, Runge, and Haugboelle, 2010, p.128). The Evolution of the Concept of Victim Essay - 2186 Words
Abstract This report will provide the information about the evolution of the concept of quot;victimquot; and the study of victimology. Victimology is a term first coined for a specialty within the field of criminology. In recent times, victimology has come to embrace a wide array of professional disciplines working with victims. In its original form, victimology examined characteristics of victims and how they quot;contributedquot; to their victimization. The emergence of the crime victims rights movement has influenced the field of victimology and the nature of the research. Current research has been helpful in identifying risk factors related to victimization, without blaming victims. The concept of victim dates backâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It may also make sense to talk about quot;tertiary crime victimsquot; who experience the harm vicariously, such as through media accounts or from watching television. Many victims feel that defining themselves as a quot;victimquot; has negative connotations, and choose instead to define themselves as a quot;survivor.quot; This is a very personal choice that can only be made by the person victimized. The term quot;survivorquot; has multiple meanings; e.g. survivor of a crime, quot;survivor benefits.quot; It remains to be seen whether this terminology for victims of crime will endure. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Victim defensesquot; have recently emerged in cases of parricide (killing ones parents) and homicide of batterers by abused spouses. Advocates for battered women were among the first to recognize the issue, and promote the quot;battered woman syndromequot; to defend women who killed or seriously injured a spouse or partner after enduring years of physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse. Chicano Studies Paper Free Essays
The United States, a place associated with hope, equal opportunity and freedom also faces many underlying issues. The idea of this ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠country has been corrupted with problems such as immigration, growing class division and most prominently the 2007 recession. These burdens have prevented people from living the ââ¬Å"American Dreamâ⬠, a concept that our country has over glorified. We will write a custom essay sample on Chicano Studies Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now The root of these ongoing problems has not been properly addressed, preventing our nation from making any progress. Looking closely at the continuous problems that the Unites States has and still faces, it is viable to say that these issues revolve around capitalism. The novel, The Barbarian Nurseries by Hector Tobar illustrates how immigrants like Araceli are victimized due to unresolved issues with money and the recession. When Araceli is prosecuted for abusing and kidnapping the Torres-Thompson children, the case eventually transitions into an issue with immigration. As the case gains media attention people like Ian Goller and Janet Bryson express resentment toward Araceli. Within Araceli, Goller and Bryson saw a representation of immigrants, who in their mind were to blame for the issues that had erupted in ââ¬Å"theirâ⬠country, such as the everlasting recession. Janet Bryson exemplifies this anger and bitterness when she boldly states: ââ¬Å"To those who want to point out how much these illegal immigrants [â⬠¦] contribute to their society [.. ] Look at our full prisons, our higher insurance rates, our lowering education standardsâ⬠(325). Bryson and Gollerââ¬â¢s actions symbolize the result of capitalism, the true villain within the novel. Capitalism has never been fully recognized as the true cause for many of the problems the U. S has faced causing immigrants like Araceli to be used as scapegoats for issues they had little influence in causing. As a result, capitalism can be seen as the barbarian in the novel, which in turn leads to barbaric actions on behalf of people like Goller and Bryson, against immigrants like Araceli who are innocently trying to secure a better life for themselves in the United States. I personally found it appalling that even after Araceli was found innocent for harming and kidnapping of the Thompson kids, Goller had the audacity to try and prosecute and deport Araceli: ââ¬Å"Your honor before you adjourn, [.. ] there is also the matter of the defendantââ¬â¢s immigration statusâ⬠(408). These never ending accusations that immigrants have to carry, prevent them from reaching that better life that they work so hard to one day achieve in the Unites States. In the end Araceli is unjustly forced to escape and essentially start a new life from scratch due to the negative associations that an immigrant label carriers. In the film A Better Life, capitalism is also a hidden factor to many of the conflicts that are portrayed throughout the film. The film depicts Carlos, a hardworking immigrant worker striving to do all he possibly can to create a better life for him and his son. This proves to be easier said than done as Carlosââ¬â¢ continuous efforts backfire and he ends up getting deported. The driving force behind his inability to reach the better life he so desperately desires is capitalism. Passion and motivation can be seen within Carlosââ¬â¢ optimism and spirit when he says: ââ¬Å"This country is a land of dreams, it can be a hard place, a cruel place, but itââ¬â¢s where I work and I dream for a better place for my sonâ⬠. Unfortunately his drive is not enough to move up economically which is the key to sustaining a better living. Even when hope is created through the purchase of a truck, his gateway to living the American dream is quickly shattered when his truck is stolen by Santiago, another immigrant worker. The injustice that he had faced when getting his truck stolen led me to resent Santiago, but I later realized that he was going through his own hardships in trying to live out his own American Dream. The darkness of capitalism had led him to a desperate barbaric action, emphasizing the want for a better life as a universal battle. Capitalism further acts as a catalyst in the film as seen through Carlos unstable living in a run down neighborhood, preventing his son Luis from getting getting the proper education he deserves and needs to accomplish a better future. The probability of his son ending up in the same oppressive situation as him becomes very probable, causing doubts of the possibility of ever reaching success. This never ending cycle of constant input with no output leads to the devastating realization that this idea of a better life may be unattainable. This understanding is described by Celo who chose to face the reality of his limited opportunities by joining a gang: ââ¬Å"They either lock us out or lock us upâ⬠. This makes me stop and realize that there is a reason behind all of the ââ¬Å"badâ⬠decisions that people make, sometimes itââ¬â¢s becomes their only option. At the end of the film, a better life is not achieved by Carlos, instead he is seen in the desert trying to cross the border, back to the same place that he had started, making one wonder if a better life is even reachable. The 2007 recession, a result of capitalism has also had a personal impact on my familyââ¬â¢s lives. Before the recession, my family lived a pretty stable life in a beautiful home that my parents had worked so hard to provide for us. When the recession struck its effects took a toll on my family for several years to come. Around 2009 my mom was laid off from her teaching position, leaving her jobless for over a year. During this time all of the financial responsibilities for the house were left to my dad who did not gain much income as a truck driver. Without any financial help from my mom, money became a huge issue for my family. Letting go of certain luxuries, such as going out to eat frequently and shopping for new gadgets whenever we pleased became difficult. As payments for the house became more complicated to pay, my parents also started drifting apart. Eventually my dad was unable to make the payments for the house causing us to lose our home as well as deal with the eventual separation of my parents. All of these events led back to the recession which has definitely taken us off the path from living the better life that my parents worked so hard to achieve. Looking back at the successes that my parents have achieved only to be beaten down by the devious recession, I strive to rebuild that ââ¬Å"better lifeâ⬠that we once had, full of unity, happiness, and achievement. Due to these burdens, several years later my family is still dealing with the consequences of an issue that has yet to be dealt with efficiently by the United States. Reaching a better life has become more difficult due to the Unites Statesââ¬â¢ inability to address a problem that has been plaguing our nation over and over again. This capitalist issue has shattered many hopes and dreams that many hoped to achieve. Life should not be based on lost aspirations but on anticipation for a successful future. Through the text, the novel and my personal experience our nationââ¬â¢s issue with capitalism can be seen as an unchanging factor in our society in both the past and present. Due to our nationââ¬â¢s failure in providing a solution for the problems that capitalism has ensued, its negative effects have come up time and time again. During the 1930ââ¬â¢s the Unites States faced an economic depression resulting in a very high unemployment rate. In order to deflect the nation away from the issues the nation was facing, immigrants were targeted for the countryââ¬â¢s falling out. The justification for these unjust actions is portrayed in the reader stating that ââ¬Å"The deportation of more Mexicans meant more jobs for real Americansâ⬠(147). These unreasonable initiatives that the nation took in order to draw attention away from United Stateââ¬â¢s real issues, appear to be very similar to the actions taken by the nation in todayââ¬â¢s recession. It is due to these continued patterns that reaching for a more stable, successful life has become difficult not only for immigrants but for everyone in the United States trying to make something of themselves. As Sunny Patterson states in her poem, ââ¬Å"Money and power and greed, the game. They suck and devour the souls of the slainâ⬠. Patterson highlights how our societies corrupted desire for money and control has selfishly left the rest of the population thirsting for the day they will be able to rebuild the path toward their desired life. It is for these reasons that I believe that our nation is still in the ââ¬Å"dessertâ⬠as Patterson suggests, facing the same unresolved problems that have progressively lead to high unemployment, rising tuition for educations, higher costs of living and so on. A positive initiative needs to be taken in order to prevent our nations from getting even worse than it already is. Martin Luther King proposes a solution to this problem when he states: ââ¬Å"We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing oriented society to a person oriented societyâ⬠(A Time to Break Silence). He suggests that a shift needs to be made from individualistic selfish needs to a population coming together and conquering the nationââ¬â¢s issues in unison. This idea is also suggested by Patterson after addressing all of the abominations that the Unites States has yet to address when she states: ââ¬Å"But come, come children, rally around and maybe together we can make a sound that will shake the trees or rattle the groundâ⬠. This simple change of coming together to change a cause is an effortless act that can bring just the right push to in bringing a positive change to our nation. This small yet useful act can be used as a way to express common concerns within a population to bring about the urgently needed change that we need in our nation. It is only through this radical change as King speaks out about that our nation will finally get out of the all too familiar desert that we have revisited over and over again. Beta Calculation and Comparison Beta is referred as a measure of the investments relative volatility. This means that it measures the risk in relation to the market or in comparison with a benchmark. It is calculated as ratio of covariance of market return and stock return to the variance of market index (Sercu 2009). In the given task, the risk on security of the company BH Macro Ltd. has been determined with the Benchmark FTSE 250 index. The calculated value for beta is 0.119756828, whereas the published value for beta that is obtained from uk.reuters.com is -0.09 (Reuters 2013). The difference in the value of beta comes due to different types of risks that are classified as systematic and unsystematic risk. Systematic risks occur as an impact of the macro economic changes, and these macroeconomic factors that lead to market risk include growth rate, government policies and expenditures, inflation rate, structure for interest rates, etc. Whereas, the unsystematic risks occur as a result of various company specific factors such as new product development, entry of new competitors, decreasing credit rating of the firm, loss of influential people, and employee turnovers or labour strikes (Sercu 2009). The difference in the calculated and published value for beta might occur because of various reasons such as different time intervals, different time frame, exclusion and inclusion of dividend, and different index. Different time intervals In the task, the beta value has been calculated by using the monthly share prices of last five years, whereas it might be possible that the beta value that has been published on Reuters might have been derived using the daily share prices. Different Time Frame The time frame that has been selected for calculating beta is 5 years, i.e. from 1 February 2008 to 31 January 2013, while the published beta might have been calculated using a different time frame. Exclusion and Inclusion of Dividend In the task, the beta has been calculated without considering the dividends as they were not available. Whereas, the published beta might have been calculated using the dividends (Sercu 2009). Different index Here, the benchmark for calculating beta is FTSE 250, and Reuters might have used some other market index as the benchmark for calculating beta. Comparison of Share price performance Share price refers to the price of a single share in the total number of companys stocks or derivatives. The share price performance of any company can be analysed using the trend analysis method. The investors can analyse and determine returns on their investments. In the given case, the share price performance of BH Macro Ltd. for last 5 years is compared with the share price performance of FTSE 250. The following graph represents the comparison of share price performance. In the graph, it is indicated that the share price performance of BH Macro Ltd. is better than that of FTSE MID 250, and the share prices have been very consistent over the period of five years. Whereas, for FTSE, the share prices decreased during the recession period of 2009 that later improved and the prices went up the market index. Then again there was a little decrease in the share price performance of FTSE in 2011-12, which improved by 2013. But the companys share price performance was not much influenced a fter the recession period of 2009 and they have been consistently improving. The share price performance can also be compared on the basis of some financial theories such as Security market line (SML), single index model (SIM), and time value of money. Security Market Line Security Market line is the graphical representation of the Capital Asset Pricing Model. The graph represents the relationship between the systematic and unsystematic risks of the company in terms of expected returns on security and the return of the whole market index at a particular time. It is considered as an effective method to determine whether a particular asset can provide rational returns or not. It also illustrates the total risk free returns and price risks. Risk is calculated through the covariance of the market returns and the variance of return on security (Barucci 2003). The slope of SML is obtained through the following equation: Return on security = Risk Free Return + {price per unit of risk * risk} The risk free rate of return that has been obtained for the BH Macro is 0.005927113. Single Index Model Single Index model is another model that can assist in comparing the share price performance of the company. The Single index model was introduced by Sharpe and it measures the risks and returns of a companys stock. It represents a relationship between the share price performance and the complete portfolio, i.e. according to the model, the share price performance or the security performance is related to the companys portfolio performance (Strong 2009). Mathematically, the model is represented in the form of the following equation: Rit = ai + bi Rmt + eit Where, Rit = return on security in the given time period, ai = constant return or alpha, bi = beta, Rmt = return on market index in given time period, eit = error term 0.006733495 = 0.005974289 + (0.119756828 * 0.006232112) + ~0 In this model, an assumption is made, i.e. the value of the error term is taken to be close to zero (~0) as it is the degree of variation in the value of return on security. Also, the value has finite variance and is not correlated with the market index or with any other security. Time Value of Money The theory of the time value of money is the most central financial theory and it states that presently, a certain amount of money has certain value in terms of buying power and the same amount of money will have a completely different buying power in the coming future. This means that the value of money decreases with time and measures the value of a certain amount of money considering the interest earned or inflation rates over a given time period (Drake and Fabozzi 2009). In the given task, the comparison of companys share price performance with the market index can be conducted by using this theory. For this, the value of 1 Euro has been calculated at the end of every month from 1 February 2008 to 31 January 2013, for the company and FTSE 250 market index. The values were calculated with the help of the following formula: Value at the end of month = Value at the beginning of the month*(1 + return) The following graph will represent the changes in the time value of money for the BH Macro and FTSE 250: On the basis of graph, it is seen that the value of Euro 1 has shown a notable change for both FTSE 250 and BH Macro, but the performance of company is better than that of FTSE 250. Comparison of Companys five-year performance with Last three months Share prices The share price performance of the company from 1 February 2008 to 31 January 2013 was compared with the last three months performance of the company, i.e. from 1 February 2013 to 20 April 2013. In the five year time period, the share price of the company has increased continuously but due to the recession and other economic factors price of the company fell by 20 % in year 2008. In this period, the share price of the company had crossed 19.50 which reflects 42 % increase in price from year 2008. For the comparison, the average of share prices of last 5 years has been taken to compare with the average share prices of last three months. The average share price of last 5 years is calculated as 17.17 Euros, and the average price for last three months was calculated as 19.94 Euros. In these last three months, the price of the share has reached to 21 euros, which shows 8 % increase in share price from 31st January, 2013 (BH MACRO LTD (BHMDF), 2013). The Following Graphs shows price change in 5 year time period and in last three months: The principal factors that affect the price change over the given time period can be identified as: Share Buy-Back If the company goes for the share buy back option, then the number of shares will reduce in the market. Thus, according to the law of supply and demand, if the availability of shares will decline, then this will decrease the supply that will eventually increase the share prices. Therefore, share buy-back is used as an important tool for increasing the share prices of the company and to deliver value to investors (The 10 Factors That Affect and Predict Stock Prices 2008). Earning results The basic objective of a company is profit making and the share prices of any company mainly depend on its earning results. If a company has good earnings, then it can expect its share prices to rise and if it does not have good earnings, then the share prices are expected to fall. Also, if the companys earnings are good, then the increased share prices will attract investors to invest in the companys stock (The 10 Factors That Affect and Predict Stock Prices 2008). Take-over or Merger Usually, when a company has been taken-over by some other company, then its share prices are expected to increase and if the company takes over another company, then the share prices are expected to fall. This also causes a sudden change in the management that leads to various changes in the operations of the company and thus, the performance of the company is affected greatly (The 10 Factors That Affect and Predict Stock Prices 2008). Other Economic Factors There are various other economic actors that also affect changes in the share prices. These factors include inflation, unemployment and interest rate changes. The increasing unemployment leads to a decline in the interest rates, which is the main profitable venture in the stock market. The rising rate of inflation decreases the returns on investments and thus, share prices fall. The comparison can also be explained on the basis of Miller and Modigilani (MM) theory. According to the M M theory, the market value of a company is mainly determined through its earning power and the risks attached with the underlying assets. The theory also assumes that there is perfect capital market, realistic investors, and freely available information, and there is no transaction or floatation costs related to investments. Besides this, the model assumes that investments and dividend decisions are irrespective of each other. The M M model is given by the following equation: P0 = (1 / (1+p))*(D1+P1) Where, P0 is the market price per share at time 0, P1 is the market price per share at time 1, D1 is the dividends per share at time 1, and p is the discount rate for risk and is constant (Sercu 2009). Conclusion From the above discussion, it can be elucidated that the share price performance of the BH Macro Limited has been better and consistent when compared with FTSE 250 market index. The calculated beta for the company came out to be 0.119756828, whereas the published beta was -0.09. The reasons could be calculation in different time intervals, different time frame, dividend inclusion and comparison through some other market index. When the share price performance for last 5 years from 1 February 2008 to 31 January 2013, was compared with that of FTSE 250, then the companys performance was found to be more consistent than the market index. The theories those were used to conduct the comparisons are SML, SIM and time value of money. Also, the comparison of the companys last five years performance with that of last three months performance, it was seen that the company had a consistent performance and the same consistency was maintained in the last three months also.
